Last Saturday, my little brother Rob and I participated in The Giant Race 5K!
We’d been on the fence about doing it…the original plan was to do C25K and run the race, but that didn’t happen. I thought about scratching it all together…if it hadn’t been such a cool race, being at AT&T Park and all, I probably would have. But I’m a sucker for a cool experience, and so we trekked down to SF early on Saturday morning.
It was overcast and cool in China Basin…perfect weather for a race if you ask me! Our race started at 9:30am sharp and Giants pitcher Matt Cain fired the starting gun! Way cool.
Not as cool as Brian Wilson giving high fives along the half marathon course, but oh well!
We walked the 5K in roughly 50-ish minutes. (Isn’t that sad? That I don’t even know my official time? Just shows how little effort I put into this race. Whoops, haha!)
Cruising up to the stadium, turning into Triples Alley and walking along the warning track to the finish line was indeed cool, though!
Here I am after the big finish…
And with my 5K medal! Woot woot.
The post-race situation was a bit of a disaster, though…they had different stations set up in the breezeways of the stadium to pick up your Tim Lincecum bobblehead, food and water, your t-shirt, and the other post-race swag they give you. It was totally crowded and unorganized…and it took us nearly 45 minutes to make our way around the stations and out of the stadium.
Rob said, “How is it that 40,000 people can be here for a game and it’s nowhere near the clusterf**k that this is?” I cracked up…and he was totally right. Maybe next year they’ll have a better system.
The swag was cool, at any rate! Here’s my medal, t-shirt and Tim Lincecum bobblehead, which I haven’t taken out of the box…but Rob unpacked his, and I don’t think it looks anything like Timmy. But that’s just me.
Here’s to adding another used bib and medal to my collection! (Nike Women’s Half Marathon 2009, Wine Country Half Marathon 2010, and The Giant Race 5K 2011!)
I might make another attempt at training to run a 5K…MAYBE.
